Separation Letter Format

A letter of separation is a document that is issued to an employee when they leave the current position they are in. A letter of separation does not mean that the employee has been fired; it could mean they resigned, their position has been terminated, they have retired, or they have died. The letter of separation lays out the terms of the separation, and usually thanks the employee for their hard work and dedication.

84 Northwest Boulevard
Washington, DC 20009

Dear Mrs. Smith

This letter is provided to you as thirty (30) days notice that your position has been terminated. After detailed cost analysis, management has decided that the position you currently occupy will be eliminated.

You are to return all company property to the storeroom, remove your belongings from your office, and contact the human resources department to conduct your exit interview.

We want to thank you for the services you have provided to the company over the past 20 years. We deeply regret this is the way things had to end. We wish you the best of luck in any future endeavors you undertake.

Cordially,

Management
